Writing Your Own Windows Phone App

Feeling ambitious and want to develop your own applications for the Windows Phone?

If so, you can develop your Windows Phone app in one of two platforms: Silverlight or XNA.

Here are some general guidelines to help you choose the proper development platforms:

Use Silverlight if you want … Use XNA if you want …
  • XAML-based, event driven application framework
  • High performance Game framework.
  • Rapid creation of a Rich Internet Application-style user interface
  • Rapid creation of multi-screen 2D and 3D games
  • To use Windows Phone controls
  • To manage art assets such as models, meshes, sprites, textures, effects, terrains, or animations in the XNA Content Pipeline
  • To play digital media
  • To use an HTML web browser control
